Nuclear clean up cost hit £73bn, was reported merely a few weeks after the government promised that 'Taxpayers will pay nothing to go nuclear'

Will it be only future investment in nuclear energy that will not cost anything?

Will we leave the nuclear waste in place once the private companies bail out when it become too expensive.

Will they handle it the same way the handle the trains?

In here I don’t mean to express any opinion here about nuclear energy (maybe some other time). I'm definitely trying to express how fed up I am of being constantly legally lied to.

Can’t we make official deceit illegal, with a mandatory jail term in Baghdad?

Don't the amounts bandied around today for everything sound utterly outlandish to you? I know they do to me...your example is a good one...where is all this huge amount of money coming from....it cannot be taxes...there aren't enough working people to create enough billions to pay for all the things promised will be done in the future or are being paid for now...how big is the National debt? It's vast in the USA, and probably shockingly large around all the developed countries, so when are we going to stop saying this and that is going to cost billions and say outright we cannot afford to pay for this at all so it's a complete non starter? Never I fear...that would take courage that clearly no politicians possess...and how on earth can these endless enquiries into every single bloody issue that comes up now cost millions? Where do those damned millions go? If it's into the pockets of the handful of people carrying them out then that's daylight robbery...next time and enquiry is proposed hundreds of tax payers should offer to do it for the government so that they can get paid some of those millions...after all it's their darned money in the first place...big hugs...

    LOL...yes, I guess it is...I've still got this stupid idea that a democracy means that over fifty per cent of the population voted in a particular government, but that's doesn't apply today...you can win with a far smaller majority under our voting system so the majority of the population starts off dissatisfied with the new government. That has to be ridiculous. Giving power back to the people as Gordon Brown suggested he would do when he became PM, might go some way to rectifying that lack of true democracy, but is bound to be very watered down by the time it reaches the statute books...rightfully, democracy should be the most civilised way human beings have of unseating an unpopular leader, when previously he would have been removed forcibly or simply killed...it still holds good in most countries where it has been established, but with the decreasing interest in politics, it means that fewer people vote so it's more difficult to make the changes those interested in politics want...don't know how to counteract that...deep sighs...Putin is trying to educate a new generation to be interested in politics and active, but some of their tactics are far from democratic, mainly because the young accept the guidance of the older generation with their own motivation and purpose, and that can lead to a whole load of abuse and manipulation...it would never be acceptable in the West.

      It's true that we don't kill leaders any more. However, this is a problem, when we were not happy with a system, people would go into the street, and get rid of the system. Democracy, has a much stronger ability to stick around, even when it does not work

        Wasn't suggesting abandoning democracy...I was suggesting strengthening it...it is the only true way for civilised human beings to decide who is going be their representatives in government...mind you, I don't really want any governments...at least not controlling everything as ours do...LOL...that does rather put me into the wrong camp of those who support reducing the power of the government...I think we should have more regional councils and only the vital facilities should be maintained by politicians like our energy supplies, home security (strictly controlled), the defence of our country also dependent upon the people's collective wish, our health and welfare, and our education (but that would only be the distribution of funds) each council would decide what type of schooling they wanted to have in their part of the country, and, the Treasury would be controlled by the politicians but with far less say over what is done with our taxes than is currently the case...again councils would decide how their allocation of funds is spent...the judiciary and police would be under the authority of the councils as well so that none can be used by a particular political party in power to suppress any opposition they don't agree with...but that's only a pipe dream and won't come about because no party is prepared to let go the reins and let the people have real spending power and the power to make decisions over their lives...

        I still think that it will not solve the main problems, maybe only the symptoms. I know it was not your suggestion to abandon democracy. It was mine. I think it's time for something new.

  If we don't believe in morals, and right and wrong, but we accept that its only (political) games, then can we really complain when somebody doesn't like your game, and chooses his own?

I think in this windy country,wind turbines can make enough power for all the electricity needs.
But that will take a lot of ingenuity,.On the other had jumping on the nuclear bandwagon is an easier option.

If the British public can't even make it to the polling station to vote then I don't see them being any less apathetic when it comes to participating in the democratic process in general, but this government is taking the piss if it claims to be democratic.

Nuclear power could cost us all a whole lot more than money in the long run.

Isn't it time housing developers were forced to instal wind turbines, solar panels and other 'green' alternatives into new builds?

If only we could find a way of harnessing all the politician's and newspapers' hot air!

But let's not kid ourselves, we're not really a democracy... we have a prime minister nobody voted into office, and there's no legal obligation for any party to keep its manifesto promises once it's elected.

    Ah, this is the problem.... most people when asked to define democracy will say 'government of the people for the people by the people' or something like that. But if we look at ancient Greece, their democracy was nothing like ours.

Democracy in this country is flawed..

the only vote you get, is the vote that decides who will make all your choices for you..

I believe they should let us vote more.. esp on things like pollution and going to war..

    If it were up to me..
    
    I have some form of id device created, maybe a usb fingerprint scanner, that you could use to log into the online voting website, this would then let you flick through all the current decisions and place your votes over the net..
    
    I'd also have these machines available in the all post offices so that they can be easily accessed by peeps without the internet or a computer..
    
    People can then vote on alot more issues, and have a say in the running of their country.
