Should anyone have the right to have children?

by ranfuchs @ 26/03/2008 - 10:36:20

John Ward was compared to a Nazi after he wrote on his blog that people living on benefits should not be allowed to continue having children for the good of the society.

Whether or not you agree with his statement, it raises an important moral dilemma that we, as a ‘free’ society refuse and face. However, not facing a question doesn’t make the dilemma go away. So let’s ask the question bluntly: “should anyone have right to have children?”

Let’s try and think about the question itself, rather than finding the easy way out by referring to China’s one child policy or Nazi Germany. After all we don’t shun breakfasts because Nazis used to have them.

Like it or not, we do not live in a free society in the sense that we can’t do what we want. We can’t drive without a driving license; we can’t drink before we are drinking age, and we can’t teach without a teaching qualification. All these laws, justified or not, limit individual freedom to protect the society as a whole, or at least some elements of it. So can we consider a situation in which we prevent people from having children?

You may not agree of doing it for social, financial, intelligence reasons, but what about extreme situations, like the mother that has killed three of her children in violence attacks, should she be allowed to have more children?

Raising children is a huge responsibility for society and for the children themselves. To claim that we are allowed to have children just because we know how to have sex is preposterous.

I am not sure there is an answer, but the question is definitely legitimate, and should be discussed rather than using names to silence it. After all it’s children that we are sacrificing.

Meeting people on the train

by ranfuchs @ 15/03/2008 - 22:23:51

The other day, at the train station, a cheerful (and quite attractive) girl handed me a brochure. It said: “meet the people behind your railway.” It seems that the train operator feels that if we get to realize that train is operated by people, we’ll feel less frustrated.

So just to keep the record straight, I don’t take the train to meet people. I am there to meet trains, and even that I don’t seem to do too successfully. In fact, I’d be much happier if I didn’t meet anyone at all on the train.

So please don’t introduce me to more people. For this I have my blog. Just make sure I get to it on time.

Visiting Germany

by ranfuchs @ 15/03/2008 - 15:18:13

Back from Germany. As usual I find the contrast with England quite amazing. First, Germany is a place where things do work. By things I mean elevators, escalators, and most of all trains. What a pleasure; a 2 hours ride in a 300 km/h train, costs only twice the cost of my daily commute fee. And unlike my daily commute, the trains do leaves on time and arrives on time.

Then, of course there is the beer. What can I say that has not been said before? It always takes me a few days before I can drink the beer here again. Then there are the restaurants. I can’t say that the food is any better, but it is definitely much cheaper.

|Yet, there is always the problem of language. Not that they don’t speak English, but it’s just not the same language

one in ten British young people believe that George Bush is the head of the commonwealth

I think it’s truly wonderful news. After all, I would have never guessed that so many young people knew what the commonwealth was. By the way, I feel that it’s high time for renaming it, as commondebt is a far less misleading name.

Briton are increasing the number of long-haul mini-breaks they take

Surprise surprise! Although I’d love to take a holiday here, I just can’t afford it. Despite the cost of flying overseas going up, an overseas holiday is still much cheaper. Spain, here I come!

Help! I need a holiday

by ranfuchs @ 11/03/2008 - 09:46:44

Once in a life time, for a change, I have decided to bite the bullet, pay the extra cost and have a family holiday in the UK. (Believe me for a family going to Spain for instance is so much cheaper). I decided to go for a real farm stay. You know the one with pigs and chicken.

The internet was my natural starting point. For the last few days, I have been looking at dozens of websites, but so far I have not found a good site that can help me. There are many problems with the sites I looked at. Some give me long lists and I have to go through one by one; others are not updated: they show availability but when you call (no online check in) they tell you they are taken yet others give prices, but when you call you find 20-30% extra in hidden costs: (some charge extra for water, heating and electricity for instance).

Does anyone know any good sites that can help with finding a UK farm stay holiday? Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good place to go to?

Mission Impossible

Today in the underground I saw a note saying: “If u see a train being vandalised call the transport police on nnnnnn.”

What do they expect me to do? Shall I do it when I go home, or send them a snail mail? My mobile doesn't work in underground.

Teachers ordered not to risk touching children

Teacher: can I speak with Mr. Smith
MS: Speaking
Teacher: Rachel just had a little accident, and until the ambulance arrives, I need your consent to treat her and stop the bleeding.
MS: what happened? Sure sure, just go and treat her. Is she OK?
Teacher: It’s pretty serious and she’s lost lots of blood, so can you please give me your fax number so that I can send you the forms allowing me to treat her in case of emergency
MS: just go and treat her
Teacher: I am very sorry sir, but I cannot without a formal waiver. You see we are restricted by government legislation from touching anyone without all paperwork done in advance …

What a good match to the policemen who did not save drowning child so as to comply with health and safety regulations.

The ultimate explanation why things always fail, even when we are so smart

by ranfuchs @ 01/03/2008 - 10:57:47

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip. After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend awake. "Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?" Holmes questioned.

Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you idiot. Someone has stolen our tent."
