Holiday, how can you afford it?

Last week I took a holiday with my family in Dorset. It was absolutely fabulous. We took a farm stay, and enjoyed every moment of it. The only thing I found hard to accept was the cost of family entry tickets.

It doesn’t matter where you chose to go, may it be sea world, amusement park or a zoo, a family ticket starts at 50 pounds, and as in most places a family includes 2 kids only, we always had to pay for an extra kid. That is, every entry was over 60 pound, excluding car park. Food and drinks we always carried in with us.

That makes about 100 for a family day. How can anyone afford it?

My plaintive cry has always been that...how can they afford it? I look at young couples with expensive cars each, a mortgage, and a child and I'm completely at a loss as to how they can afford all of these things...I suppose the answer is...they can't, they're up to their eyeballs in debt...something we've never ever been in because we'd rather go without than owe more than we can repay quickly...when it cost ten pounds for two cups of coffee and two baps with grotty fillings as we discovered in Poole on Saturday, I'm surprised you got away with only £100 a day for a family of five...everything has gone crazy...it's silly money now...and scary too...

  It's just that I never learnt to be in debt.
  Downside is that I don't have flashy car home or anything else. Upside is, that I don't care what interest rate is doing

    Yes, more or less the same attitude, but did need a mortgage which we're now free of...going without isn't fashionable in today's world...pity but there we go...

      You have it exactly right: the idea that one should save up in advance for something seems to be largely ignored. Want it - have it. Buy now, pay later.
      
      Managing on a little makes me much more creative in finding inexpensive ways of doing things: charity shops are a good source of outer clothes and home furnishings; Freecycle is good for bigger items sometimes, and home cooked food made from real ingredients is tasty, better for you, and also cheaper than ready-made slop.
      
      And it also teaches me that I actually *need* to buy very little other than food and fuel (and wine!) - and out of that, I have found I want much less also. Better for my spirit, bank balance,and the planet.

        Oh, we made do for years and years and I don't think we're any the poorer for it...got looked down upon though by lots of people of a more snobby disposition including my own cousin who could barely bring herself to speak to us she living a mile down the road in the rich area while we lived in what was then known as debtor's paradise, something we didn't know till we moved there...LOL...mind you, there was a whole mixture of people of varying degrees of education from scientists, psychologists, teachers, nurses, coach drivers, postmen and a variety of other occupations living around us so people do look down on others according to their address which is mad considering many of the people have far better jobs than the snobby ones had...I honestly looked at the better off and found them so wanting in so many ways that I'd much rather be how I was and to hell with them....big hugs...

My cousins have a huge family - my uncle still gets the younger ones to lie blatantly about their age so they get in for free.

You're right - it is soooo expensive to take a family out in this country. Try doing it with one child and then you will get ticked off. All family prices are based on two adults and two children as though the nuclear family is the only one that exists in this day and age. Two adults and one child - cheaper to pay full price and no reduction for you as a family. I guess the same is true for single parent families.
