Link between child porn and terrorists discovered in police raids.
In the raid, police discovered that terrorist organizations were using child porn web sites to transfer messages, and assumed that the regular users of the sites would not disclose such communication to the police.
This brings me to the question of profiling. In the UK ‘profiling’ becomes a dirty concept that even if effective, must be avoided at any cost. So when random checks are conducted in tube stations, they are truly random, and the 20th person will be chosen, even if the 19th is holding an AK47 machine gun, and a knife between his teeth.
NYC had a different approach, and when they decided to reduce street crime in the city, they target minor offenders. That is, instead of random checking at train stations, they targeted fare evaders, under the assumption that those who do not respect the law, are more likely to be potential hard core criminals.
The system worked, and many more drugs, knives and other weapons were seized, than in any random search operation.
NY has an amazing track record of crime reduction. Can we learn from them?
